  • Liability insurance issues for employers;
  • Legislative update; and
  • the Latest news in Data Security
Are you, like many of us, dissatisfied with your physical appearance?  Do you perceive yourself too skinny, too short, too tall or perhaps a bit too heavy?  Well take heart comrades.  Soon those qualities that trouble us may be our ticket to a new job, or they may be the reason we keep a current position in the face of a layoff.  Why has my size suddenly become my shield against “injustice” you ask?  It’s our old, and ever expanding, friend Employment Law, and of course the inevitable fear his trends instill in the hearts and minds of business owners making hiring and firing decisions.
The latest discrimination trend coming to a jurisdiction near you involves the implementation of laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of height and weight.  Michigan already has one. The District of Columbia has a law banning discrimination on the basis of personal appearance.  And not to be left out, Massachusetts appears poised to join their ranks.  Representative Byron Rushing (9th Suffolk) has proposed an amendment to our existing discrimination laws that will make any discrimination on the basis of height and weight unlawful. (House Bill No. 1758) The bill is moving rapidly through our Congress, and it looks to be on the books in 2014.
To learn more on this topic and other trending issues in employment law, please join me on November 13, 2013 at the Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce in Mansfield for another edition of Employment Law Update. This session will run from 7:45 AM -
9:00 AM.
