Healthy Living/Healthy Aging Senior Expo

The Healthy Living/Healthy Aging Senior Expo is coming to the Attleboro Norton YMCA on Thursday, November 10. From 10 AM to 1 PM, more than 20 exhibitors will be on hand with helpful product and service information for our senior community. The Expo takes place at the Y’s Downtown Branch, 63 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA. Admission is free.

According to Cyndee Goodinson-Lindsey, Director of the Sweet Community House and Active Older Adults, the Expo is designed to provide “one-stop-shopping" for older adults, their families and caregivers looking to connect with valuable local resources.

“At the Attleboro Norton YMCA, we care about seniors and their wellbeing,” Goodinson-Lindsey said.  “Attendees can learn about and explore options for housing, insurances, medical programs and services, leisure activities, education, spirituality, community and government services, healthy living, and much more,” she said.

Attendees also will have an opportunity to participate in tours of the YMCA and to learn about membership opportunities. “We have a thriving community of active older adults who make the Y and physical activity an important part of their healthy lifestyle. Our Y brings members of all ages together for group exercise classes, sports, social events, specialized programming, volunteer opportunities, and so much more,” Goodinson-Lindsey offered. “By coming together as a community, our members stay young at heart with great workouts, wonderful friends, and a lot of laughs!”

About Attleboro Norton YMCA

On October 10, 1867, an association of young men rented a room in the rear of 37 Park Street and the Young Men’s Christian Association of Attleboro was founded. Its program was a reading room. In 1886, larger space was needed by the rapidly growing Association, so space was acquired on North Main Street. It was in May of 1886 that the Attleboro YMCA was chartered with the Commonwealth.

The Attleboro YMCA Directors and local manufacturers purchased a plot of land for $1,350 on County Street and laid a cornerstone in 1889 for the first YMCA owned building. This building was later known as G.A.R. Hall. W.J. Chadbourne was hired as General Secretary and then became the first paid employee. Membership totaled 94, and a Women’s auxiliary was organized the same year.

In 1909, the present building at 63 North Main Street was dedicated by a gift of Mrs. Fannie Tappan, in memory of her late husband, William C. Tappan. Through the initial effort of Raymond Morton and Lewis Chilson, the Attleboro YMCA Endowment and Memorial Funds were established to perpetuate the work of the YMCA.

Serving the communities of Attleboro, Norton, and Rehoboth, the Attleboro Norton YMCA is committed to strengthening our community through programs and services that foster youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
